What are the forecasts for 2023 for the Italian steel industry?
This is the question that Industriaitaliana.it asked to Carlo Mapelli, a professor in the Mechanics department of the Politecnico di Milano and an expert in the steel industry.
2022 was a challenging year and the causes still persist: the decline in demand from some outlet sectors, such as the automotive and the construction sectors; energy and raw material prices; inflation; credit crunch and war.
For this reason, 2023 will also put companies in the steel sector to the test, but, Mapelli predicts, those that have made the right investments to improve product quality and to position themselves in the high value-added segments of the market need not fear.
“It is necessary to build factories with a high level of automation, i.e. able to exercise precise and effective control over all stages of the process. The idea is to optimize the management of raw materials, to improve quality standards and plant efficiency. Flexibility is needed to meet the product diversification required by the market”, Mapelli suggests and hopes for. “This optimization of processes involves containing energy costs, which is essential in this period and for the future, and the offer of product with the highest mechanical qualities.”
